Professor Dr Kamarulzaman Askandar
Professor Dr Kamarulzaman Askandar is a Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies and a peace activist. He is presently based at the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage, Universiti Malaysia Sabah. He is the Regional Coordinator of the Southeast Asian Conflict Studies Network since 2001, member of the ERMES EU Mediation Standby Team since 2013, and a Steering Committee Member in a number of regional organisations and networks including the Southeast Asian Human Rights and Peace Network, and the Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict. He is the Malaysian representative of the Council for Security and Cooperation in the Asia Pacific since 2008.
He has been involved in peace building in Southeast Asia over the last 20 years, mostly on conflict issues in areas like Aceh, Mindanao and Patani. He has been active in organising dialogue sessions between conflict parties and stakeholders and facilitating peacebuilding capacity building programs in the region. He initiated programmes such as the “Dreamkeepers” of Patani, the “Penang Peace Seminar”, the “Consolidation for Peace for Aceh, Mindanao, and Patani”, the “Mindanao Educators Peace Summit”, and the “Mediation and Reconciliation Services” programme. He is also the Founder of Sekolah Damai (Peace School), a school for refugee children in Penang, Malaysia.
