The conference will be held from 15-16 August 2016 at the Royale Chulan Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.
The theme, “More for Peace, Less for War”, is premised upon channeling resources and human capital to prioritize Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) in nurturing and strengthening global peace. Modern warfare has seen worldwide use of more sophisticated and destructive military hardware empowered by STI, and nations are spending heavily on these worldwide.
It is time for the science community to take a stand to prioritize Research & Development (R&D) for peaceful means. Disarmament, alleviating poverty, fighting diseases and hunger and countering climate change are examples of what science can do for the world. But scientists alone cannot make it happen; economists, social scientists, and humanities experts need to cooperate as well to realise the impact through the quadruple helix of government, academia, industry and community. Thus, this conference aims to facilitate a much needed discourse among relevant stakeholders on the role of STI in forging global peace.
The conference aims to provide a necessary forum to advocate the use of science, technology and innovation (STI) for peaceful purposes, identifying solutions to resolve the challenges and gaps in security and humanitarian issues, and provide recommendations on the roles of human capital in STI to contribute to the peace agenda.
Focus Area 1 : Mitigating Climate Change Risk
Climate change has begun to adversely impact ecosystems, economies as well as communities and this could escalate into a crisis that threatens global peace. Therefore, there is an urgent need for all parties to come to a common consultative platform and find practical solutions in the spirit of responsible and ethical cooperation.
Focus Area 2 : Addressing Ideology, Geopolitics & Security
The world is witnessing an unprecedented mass displacement of people due to wars, conflicts and natural disasters resulting in an escalation of humanitarian, political, security and development challenges faced by humankind. STI needs to be leveraged to facilitate constructive and knowledge-based international partnerships to address these problems. This would hopefully forge greater understanding among nations and lead to a more peaceful and sustainable global landscape.
Focus Area 3 : Forging Peace through Economics, Poverty Alleviation & Inclusivity
Income disparity between the rich and poor in major countries and regions poses a major risk to peace. Inclusive development and mission-oriented R&D can generate solutions to alleviate poverty and providing basic human needs. There is a need for new financial mechanisms and innovation towards making technologies affordable and accessible, apart from encouraging social entrepreneurship.
Focus Area 4 : Building Awareness & Consensus through Conventions, Policies
Science facilitates a confluence of ideas, knowledge, expertise and resources that transcend national boundaries and traditional disciplines. The universal scientific community is well positioned towards effectively addressing pertinent global problems and resolving conflicts through scientific exchange. The spirit that drives the scientific endeavor can help forge the agenda of peace by fostering greater understanding.
